Script

N.B. This is the final draft of my script as I wrote it in October. Through storyboard, animatic, shot list and previs some shots get changed and cut out.

“THE LIFE OF A STUDENT ANIMATOR”

INT. BEDROOM - MORNING

SERIES OF SHOTS (cut between shots, lively):

A) She sits down to a desk with a mug of coffee, thumbnails propped up next to the computer.

B) Opens an animation program on her computer, giving her arms and hands a stretch while it loads. Once open a 3D character is shown on the screen. With a perfectly serious face the STUDENT reaches for the mouse and moves some rig controllers. It is only a couple of seconds before she is deforming the rig, moving and distorting the limbs and face in horrifying and comical ways. She chuckles to herself.

C) STUDENT sits with shoulders slightly hunched, eyes narrowed on screen with very little blinking, as she clicks and presses keys on the keyboard automatically.

D) Quietly says the same word/phrase repeatedly, each time with slow, exaggerated mouth movements.

E) Watches her reflection in a mirror as she twists her face into various expressions with different levels of cartoon extremity.

F) More monotonous clicking.

G) STUDENT wiggles in her seat, moving her arms and twisting her body. She watches herself, repeating movements at different speeds and angles.

INT. BEDROOM - EARLY AFTERNOON

SERIES OF SHOTS (cont’d):

H) STUDENT slouched in chair, eating a sandwich while the sounds of a cartoon play from the computer. The room is much bright now, sun lighting up the room through the window.

I) She walks across room normally, then turns around and walks back across it with very exaggerated movements. In the middle of a particularly daft walk there is a knock on the door. STUDENT stops dead. HOUSEMATE raises a questioning eyebrow as they peer round the bedroom door. STUDENT looks awkwardly back at her abandoned computer, then back at HOUSEMATE with a tight face.

J) Yet more monotonous clicking.

K) STUDENT clicks something and an error sound plays over the speakers. After a moment of staring uncomprehendingly at the screen she lets out a loud growl, tipping her head back in exasperation then letting it fall forward and hit the desk.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

SERIES OF SHOTS (cont’d):

L) STUDENT is now slouched in her chair, the dim light from the bulb in the ceiling making the room look very lonely. She clicks lazily with one hand, the other hand on a coffee mug on the desk, her eyelids heavy and drooping. She shakes her head rapidly, forcing her eyes open and leaning closer to the screen determinedly.

M) STUDENT now lies slouched on her bed in a very uncomfortable-looking position and with an unattractive face as she lifts crisps to her mouth, staring listlessly at another cartoon. She glances at another screen that reads, “RENDERING - frame 50 of 750”. She looks back at her cartoon. This goes on for a long time until a little noise alerts her to the ‘RENDER COMPLETE’ notice on the other screen. Her eyes widen and her crisp-shovelling arm freezes.

N) Back at the desk, she watches aptly as her animation plays on the screen. Her eyebrows raise slowly as she watches it, and then she suddenly erupts from her seat, hands balled into fists and shot into the air in victory.

STUDENT
YES!!!! Ahh, woohoo! Yeah, yeah, yeah...

She gets up and dances around her bedroom, making happy sounds.

O) Finally, she collapses onto her bed, eyes closed but a tired smile on her face.

THE END
